Palm Trees and Fronds

Palm trees and fronds have a very high fibre content, which means processing is often much more difficult for this material than for other types of garden waste.

Will WSN Environmental Solutions accept my palm trees and fronds?

Palm trees and fronds are accepted at all our waste and recycling centres and landfills, except for Artarmon and Auburn. Palm trees, fronds and trunks must be no greater than 150mm in diameter and 1 metre in length.

  • You will be asked to hand unload your vehicle and place the material in the dedicated garden organics area. Supervisors check to ensure that other types of waste do not contaminate the material.
  • Palm trees and fronds have a very high fibre content, which means they have to be processed several times in order to be used for compost. This extra processing means that the rate for disposing of palms and fronds is higher than for general garden waste.
  • Due to space restrictions at some transfer stations, garden organics and palms need to be bulked up and transported to a specialised composting facility for processing. Palm trees and fronds cost more to dispose of at transfer stations due to these additional transport and handling costs.
  • To find the WSN facility closest to you, contact WSN customer service on 1300 651 116.

What else can I do with my palm trees and fronds?

Starting a worm farm or compost bin is a great way to recycle organic material from the garden and kitchen. If you have young children in the house, it can also be a fun project for them to work on with you. For more information about worm farming and composting, contact your local council or visit the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change website.
